The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has said the Board is leveraging its regulatory powers and sourcing authority to transform artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) into a key driver of national economic growth.
He stressed that the Board’s strategic interventions aim to ensure responsible production while maximising benefits for Ghana.
Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ forum, Mr Gyamfi explained that the Gold Board is implementing measures to professionalise ASM, enhance transparency, and integrate the sector into the formal economy.
“We’re leveraging our sourcing power and regulatory authority to reshape ASM into a force for economic growth,” he said, highlighting that artisanal miners, when properly supported, can contribute significantly to national revenue.
He added that the Ghana Gold Board is actively curbing illegal mining practices and smuggling, while promoting environmental stewardship and traceability.
“Responsible sourcing isn’t optional; it’s a legal and economic necessity. By formalising ASM, we ensure both compliance and prosperity,” he noted.
Mr Gyamfi also pointed out that ASM reform is creating jobs and empowering local communities, as miners receive training, access to fair markets, and better working conditions.
“This isn’t just about gold; it’s about sustainable development and livelihoods for thousands of Ghanaians,” he explained.
He concluded by affirming the Mahama administration’s commitment to transforming the gold sector into a cornerstone of national development.
“Our work ensures that Ghana’s mineral wealth translates directly into economic growth, social development, and global competitiveness,” Mr Gyamfi said.
