Former Ghana international Tony Baffoe has called for more support for women’s football, especially the Black Queens.
Baffoe made the comments on the micro-blogging site X, after Ghana’s 2-0 loss to England in an international friendly on Tuesday night.
Although Ghana lost, Baffoe, who is currently the General Secretary of the Professional Footballers’ Association of Ghana (PFAG), was impressed with what he saw.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Walaiii Black Queens we have a team! let’s support women’s football to the maximum our lady’s are solid !!!</p>— Anthony Baffoe (@AnthonyBaffoe) <a href="https://twitter.com/AnthonyBaffoe/status/1995962902193602858?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 2, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Tuesday’s match was part of Ghana’s preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco for the third consecutive time. The tournament will start on 17th March and end on 3rd April, 2025.
Baffoe's call for support is the latest in a series following years of underfunding and inadequate support for the women's game.
In October, the Black Queens boycotted training due to unpaid bonuses, ahead of the Women’s 2026 WAFCON Qualifier against Egypt.
The Queens were owed bonuses from their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco. Joy Sports checks revealed each player was owed $9500 in bonuses after the tournament, which ended in July.
The team had initially threatened to boycott the first leg of the 2026 WAFCON Qualifier against Egypt in Ismailia, but went ahead to play the game following meetings with some leaders in camp. However, after repeated failed promises, the Queens boycotted training until the government resolved the outstanding bonuses.
Currently, the Black Princesses, the national Under-20 team, have also not received per diems for the World Cup Qualifier against Tunisia. The match was played in September.
