From January 1, 2026, the Ghana Card will become mandatory for the purchase and renewal of motor and other insurance products in the country.
The new requirement was announced in a notice issued by the National Insurance Commission (NIC), which JoyBusiness has sighted.
According to the Commission, all customers will be required to present a valid Ghana Card before completing any insurance transaction.
Corporate clients will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number when undertaking motor insurance transactions.
The NIC said the move is aimed at improving claims handling and strengthening Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering measures within the insurance industry.
The Commission believes the directive will also help reduce fraud and align Ghana’s insurance sector with global financial services standards.
The development suggests the insurance industry is aligning with similar measures introduced by the Bank of Ghana, which require the Ghana Card for deposits and other financial transactions.
