Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Bryan Acheampong, says he will support whoever emerges victorious in the party’s presidential primaries, even if he does not win.
Speaking on PM Express on Tuesday, the former Abetifi MP said party unity must come before personal ambition.
He acknowledged that the NPP is currently divided and warned that hesitation to commit to party loyalty deepens internal cracks.
When asked how divided the party is, he said it is clear there are tensions.
He cited a recent incident involving another presidential aspirant who declined to answer whether he would support the eventual winner.
The former Agric Minister described that posture as unhealthy.
He said in a competitive political environment, an aspirant must be bold enough to commit to supporting the winning candidate as healthy competition demands.
Dr Acheampong did not hesitate when the same question was put to him.
“You don’t have to ask me,” he said. “I will support whoever wins.”
He said that commitment stands even though he believes it is unlikely that anyone else would win.
The former MP stressed that even in that scenario, he would still support the winner.
Dr Acheampong said that it is the responsibility of both politicians and party members. He insisted that loyalty after internal contests is critical to party cohesion and electoral success.
His comments come at a time when the NPP is preparing for a keenly contested internal race to elect a flagbearer ahead of the next general elections.
The process has already triggered open competition among senior party figures, raising concerns about divisions and post-primary reconciliation.
Dr Acheampong framed his position as a matter of principle, not strategy, stating that supporting the winner is “what you do as a political party and as a politician.”
