Former Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South and former Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea has called on delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consider the nation’s future carefully when selecting a presidential candidate for the upcoming elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, January 9, Atta Akyea emphasised the importance of competence and experience, urging that decisions should not be made based on tribal considerations.
Atta Akyea, who is a member of the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia campaign team, stated that delegates must avoid “playing lottery with the future” of the country.
He referred to the party’s previous decisions, particularly the way they handled the selection of leaders in the past.
He highlighted how delegates had given former President John Agyekum Kufuor a second chance due to his track record, and similarly, how former President Nana Akufo-Addo had successfully led the party on three separate occasions.
"I will tell the delegates that they shouldn’t play lottery with the future of this country," Atta Akyea counseled.
"There is a track record. What they did for President Kufuor, they gave him a second chance. As for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, he has even faced the electorate on three occasions. They should give him the same advantages. It will provide the unity that the party needs."
Atta Akyea further emphasised that the party must avoid using tribal differences as a tool for division.
"We should never come across as individuals who use minority tribes as a game. We should see that a man of competence should be given the space to come and lead this country, and I think they will do that," he added.
The NPP flagbearer primary is scheduled for January 31.
