Following JoyNews’ recent Hotline documentary highlighting galamsey activities along the Bui Power Plant, Collins Adomako-Mensah, Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, has called for a permanent security presence at the facility.
Mr Adomako-Mensah expressed concern over the current level of security, describing it as inadequate to tackle the scale of illegal mining operations in the area.
"The cost of security on the banks of Bui has gone down. They continuously have to engage security personnel to be there 24 hours. But if you look at the number they have in terms of security, the number of people who man those areas as security agents, and you compare that to activities and the number of people who are involved in the galamsey, obviously, they will be overpowered," he said.
"And that is why we need a bigger hand to come in and assist Bui Power Authority in solving this particular menace," he added.
Mr Adomako-Mensah, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, urged authorities to take immediate action to safeguard the plant and prevent further disruption to its operations, emphasising that enhanced security is crucial for both national infrastructure and environmental preservation.
