The Court of Appeal has ordered the Inspector General of Police to take immediate steps to promote forty (40) Police Chief Inspectors to their appropriate ranks.

A three-member panel of the court, sitting in Kumasi, upheld an appeal filed by the affected officers, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Okpattah.

The appeal challenged an earlier decision of the Kumasi High Court, which had dismissed their suit and ruled that a Chief Inspector was not entitled to automatic promotion merely by attaining higher academic qualifications.

In a unanimous decision delivered on Wednesday, the Court of Appeal held that the exclusion of the officers from the promotion exercise, while others were promoted, amounted to an act of injustice against them.

The court further directed the police administration to promote the officers within six months and to pay all entitlements due them in line with the promotions.
