A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ken Ohene Agyapong, says his vision and proven record of sustainable job creation give him an edge over the four other candidates as the party heads into the presidential primary on Saturday.

He has consequently expressed optimism that the delegates will vote massively for him in Saturday’s polls.

He said his credentials placed him ahead of his competitors in the race for the party's presidential ticket for the 2028 general election.

"I am very confident that with the help of God, I will win convincingly," the former Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) told the Daily Graphic.

Mr Agyapong, who placed second in the party’s 2023 presidential primary, said delegates had overwhelmingly accepted his campaign message, and that would translate into votes in the election.

I am the most formidable person to beat the (governing party) NDC in 2028. I am the most experienced and prepared to do so,” he stated.

Vision

Mr Agyapong said he would make Ghana a sustainable industrialised country, leveraging agriculture and tourism, saying his mindset revolution, dealing with corruption and indiscipline, gives him an edge over others.

He said his vision of moving specific ministries to strategic regional locations was a testimony to his commitment to national socio-economic redistribution.

Mr Agyapong said under his presidency, he would assemble the best brains and skills in financial economics to redefine the country’s socio-economic framework, adding that all the financial economic fundamental anomalies, such as the high cost of doing business, a dependent economy and poor trade balance (import-driven economy), would be addressed.

“High public sector wages but less productivity, raw material economy, negative effective tax rate economy, fragile and weak fiscal framework, meritocracy, expenditure-controlled economy, less private sector involvement, short-term socio-economic policies, etc., will be addressed,” he said.

“I have solid policies out of well researched, collected data and developed value chains to build a new economic framework for Ghana,” the businessman cum astute politician said.

Centred policies

Mr Agyapong said he had the most attractive and feasible but specific policy for the party's delegates and all citizens.

He said he would leverage his massive goodwill among Ghanaians, namely the youth, women, men, and all segments along the social stratification, adding that his long-standing experience in politics, popularity, his benevolent nature, and unifying ability would win the day for him.

“I have the qualities to unify the NPP and make it the formidable political party to recapture power from the NDC,” he said.

“All the hurt stakeholders in NPP will be urged to come back,” Mr Agyapong said.

He touted his credentials as a true party man who had remained loyal and served the NPP faithfully since 1992. 

The primary would take place against the backdrop of broader internal reforms.

In July 2025, the NPP scheduled a National Delegates Conference to consider about 50 proposed constitutional amendments aimed at strengthening the party.

Among the key proposals was a move to abolish the Special Electoral College used in presidential primaries and significantly expand the electoral base to include a wider range of party officials and structures.

The proposed expanded electoral college would include members of the National Council, National Executive Committee, Regional and Constituency Executive committees, electoral area coordinators, polling station executives, the National Council of Elders, National Patrons, past National Directors who are party members, MPs, past National Officers, external branch delegates, founder members, TESCON representatives, ministers and deputy ministers, metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives, and representatives of the party’s special organs.
