The National Chief Imam, Shaikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has congratulated former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on his victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Dr Bawumia emerged as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential elections, defeating four other aspirants in a fiercely contested race.
On behalf of the Muslim community, His Eminence commended Dr Bawumia for his win and praised the NPP for conducting a peaceful and orderly congress.
“The decision of the delegates is a clear manifestation that Ghana is not a theocracy but a democracy beautified by religious pluralism,” he said.
The Chief Imam also lauded the other contestants for their gracious concession, highlighting the importance of unity following intra-party contests.
“Indeed, they have demonstrated that in a civilised democratic institution such as NPP, approaches to intra-party contests are plural, but the ultimate objective remains singular,” he emphasised.
In addition, His Eminence praised the Police and the Electoral Commission for ensuring a transparent and accountable process.
“They exhibited transparency, accountability, and objectivity in their roles in the conduct of the primary election,” he noted.
The National Chief Imam concluded by reminding Ghanaians of their civic responsibility to strengthen democracy.
“Democracy is shared responsibility and a civic duty. When we all play our roles effectively in pursuit of democratic prosperity, in the end, we will not remember the discomfort of our individual struggles, but the comfort of our collective success,” he said.
