The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has assured party supporters that leadership is taking concrete steps to reunite members following the party’s recent presidential primary that elected Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Mr Mohammed acknowledged that internal elections often generate tensions and dissatisfaction among supporters, but insisted that reconciliation remains a top priority for the party.

“After an election like this, you will certainly have dissenting views from members who are dissatisfied with one thing or the other,” he said.

“But I want to assure everybody that we will take the needed steps to reconcile all members of our party.”

He explained that reconciliation is not limited to any single camp or individual but must involve all factions within the party, including supporters of the five aspirants who contested the primaries.

“Reconciliation is not about fine-tuning one individual or one camp,” Mr Mohammed noted. “It cuts across whether you were supporting another candidate or not. All factions and all aspirants are members, and everyone needs reconciliation.”

According to him, unity within the party goes beyond resolving personal grievances and must focus on strengthening the entire party structure.

“You are not reconciled independently. You are reconciled into a system, and that system also needs reconciliation,” he added. “The national party will take this process seriously and ensure it is carried through.”

Mr Mohammed also cautioned party members against openly supporting specific candidates during internal contests, stressing that such actions contributed to divisions within the party.

“When the national party said no officer should openly support any candidate, this was the reason,” he explained. “It did not affect only the Bawumia camp. All camps had officers supporting them.”

His comments come in the wake of the NPP’s presidential primary, held on January 31, which saw former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the party’s candidate for the 2028 general election.

Since the announcement of the results, there have been calls from sections of the party for swift reconciliation to prevent lingering divisions and strengthen unity ahead of the national elections.

Haruna Mohammed reiterated that party leadership remains committed to inclusiveness and cohesion, urging members to put aside differences and work together for the party’s success in 2028.
