Evans Nimako, director of elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed strong confidence that the party’s candidate will win the Ayawaso East parliamentary by‑election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
Speaking to Joy News ahead of the poll, Nimako said the mood on the ground, party unity, and grassroots mobilisation are key factors behind the NPP’s optimism.
“Come March 3, 2026, the good people of Ayawaso East will see the need to vote for the candidate sponsored by the New Patriotic Party,” he said.
“The way constituents came together to select and claim our candidate shows how we are a united front ready to prosecute this agenda. We are very much ready to go into the contest and snatch the seat.”
The by‑election follows the death of former MP Mahama Naser Toure earlier this year.
Both major parties have now named their flagbearers for the contest in the vibrant Greater Accra constituency.
The NPP has nominated Baba Ali Yussif, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) elected Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed as its candidate during a primary on February 7, 2026.
However, the NDC primary has been clouded by controversy. Several media reports and party sources indicate that delegates were allegedly offered items including televisions, cash, and other gifts — accusations that many media houses and civil society actors have described as indicative of vote‑buying. The party subsequently constituted a three‑member investigative committee to look into the matter.
Baba Jamal has firmly rejected the vote‑buying allegations and pledged his cooperation with the internal probe, stressing that he remains committed to the party and the by‑election process.
NDC officials have also maintained that the process will not affect their electoral prospects, even as calls for stricter adherence to electoral norms continue to emerge from observers.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is understood to be monitoring the situation to ensure compliance with Ghana’s electoral laws, although no formal charges have been announced at this stage.
