The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has said that his party would not resort to vote-buying in the Ayawaso East by-election, stressing that the NPP is offering principled leadership rather than material inducements.
Appearing on Channel One TV on Monday, March 2, Mr Mustapha criticised the campaign approach of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed.
He accused the former High Commissioner to Nigeria of engaging in vote-buying during the NDC’s constituency primary.
According to him, the NPP remains committed to presenting credible leadership and prioritising the long-term interests of residents in the constituency.
“We have told the people of Ayawaso East that we do not have motorbikes, GH¢10,000 packages or television sets to distribute,” he said.
“What we offer is a firm commitment to provide the leadership the constituency deserves and to place their needs first — not to treat them as tools for advancing anyone’s political ambitions.”
Mr Mustapha’s remarks came on the eve of the by-election, as a new survey by Global InfoAnalytics suggests a strong lead for the NDC candidate.
The poll, conducted between February 28 and March 1 among 972 respondents, projected that Baba Jamal could secure 75 per cent of the votes. In contrast, the NPP’s candidate, Baba Ali, was forecast to obtain 21 per cent.
Voters in Ayawaso East are at the polls to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of the sitting MP early on this year.
