The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated Nabil Fahmy on his appointment as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, describing him as a highly respected diplomat with extensive experience.
The commendation underscores the African Union’s readiness to deepen ties with the Arab bloc, with the Chairperson noting that the appointment comes at a critical time when stronger cooperation is needed to address shared global challenges.
In a statement issued on 30 March 2026, the African Union Commission emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration between Africa and the Arab world in promoting peace, security and sustainable development.
“In the current global geopolitical context, the AU stands ready to work closely with H.E. Fahmy to deepen cooperation, strengthen policy coordination, and promote common positions in international fora,” Mr Youssouf said.
He noted that the longstanding relationship between the African Union and the League of Arab States has been instrumental in advancing mutual interests, particularly in areas of regional stability and development.
The AU Chairperson also paid tribute to the outgoing Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, commending his dedicated service and the strong working relationship he maintained with the African Union Commission over the years.
The Commission expressed confidence that Mr Fahmy’s leadership would further strengthen AU–League of Arab States relations and enhance cooperation across both regions.
The League of Arab States, which brings together countries across North Africa and the Middle East, has long partnered with the African Union on key continental and cross-regional issues. Observers say the leadership transition presents an opportunity to renew commitments to multilateralism amid evolving global political and economic dynamics.
The African Union Commission extended its best wishes to Mr Fahmy for a successful tenure as Secretary-General.
