President Donald Trump will attend Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the plans during a briefing on Thursday. The match will feature Spain against Argentina. Leavitt described the upcoming appearance as “a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America’s ability to host the world on the grandest stage.”
FIFA Expectations and Precedent
While the White House did not explicitly detail the trophy presentation ceremony, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously stated that he and the president intend to participate in the proceedings together. Infantino noted in a recent interview with Swiss outlet Blue Sport that the plan remains consistent with historical norms for host nations. “Yes, hopefully we’ll present the trophy together in the final,” Infantino said. “That’s always been the plan, and that’s how it’s always been done in the past – the president of the country where the final is held presents the trophy together with the Fifa president.”
The tradition of heads of state participating in the ceremony is well-established. At the 2022 tournament in Qatar, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani joined Infantino to present the trophy to Lionel Messi. Similarly, Vladimir Putin awarded medals to the winning French team following the 2018 final in Russia.
Navigating Past Sporting Appearances
President Trump previously attended the Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium last summer. His participation in the post-match ceremony created moments of uncertainty for players on the pitch. Following Chelsea’s victory, the president remained on the podium, standing near captain Reece James as the trophy was lifted. “Before, they told me he was going to present the trophy, and then exit the stage,” James said of Trump afterwards. “I thought that he was gonna exit the stage. But I think he wanted to stay.” Chelsea’s Cole Palmer also reflected on the event, noting, “I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy, so I was a bit confused.”
Political Involvement in the Tournament
Although the president did not attend any of the tournament’s first 102 matches, his influence remained a topic of conversation. He maintained a close working relationship with Infantino throughout the planning process. This involvement extended to the field when Trump personally contacted the FIFA president to request a review of a red-card suspension issued to American striker Folarin Balogun. Although FIFA later cleared Balogun to play, the intervention drew significant attention.
Ahead of Sunday’s final, the president is scheduled to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City on Friday. When asked which team the president might support in the championship match, Leavitt indicated she was uncertain but suggested, “I’m sure he’ll have a fun answer for you.”
Resonance Across Africa
The 2026 World Cup has captivated audiences across the African continent, where football remains a primary passion. Recent surveys indicate that over 90% of sports fans in countries like Ghana and South Africa have been deeply engaged with the tournament’s progress. For these viewers, the high-profile attendance of world leaders at the final underscores the tournament's status as a premier global event. This level of international spectacle continues to shape consumer trends, media consumption, and cultural exchange throughout African markets.
As the tournament concludes, the focus remains on the intersection of sport and statecraft, highlighting the unique diplomatic weight the World Cup final carries as it brings global leadership and athletic excellence together on American soil.
