The Minority in Parliament is demanding a detailed account of expenditure related to Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following government’s disclosure that GH¢58.9 million was spent to meet the country’s financial obligations for the tournament.

The Minority is also seeking clarification on the use of about GH¢115 million reportedly raised through a fundraising campaign to support the Black Stars’ participation in the competition.

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, said the Minority wants a comprehensive reconciliation of all funds mobilised for the national team, including contributions from private individuals and corporate organisations.

He said the requested breakdown should show the amounts received, the dates on which payments were made, the accounts into which the funds were paid, the persons or institutions that received them, how the money was spent and any balance left after the tournament.

“These contributions cannot simply disappear into a general pool without accountability,” Mr Assafuah said.

He argued that contributors who supported the national team financially had a legitimate interest in knowing how their resources were utilised.

“If private individuals and corporate Ghana supported the national team with millions of cedis and dollars, Ghanaians have a legitimate interest in knowing how those resources were used,” he said.

The demand follows an earlier disclosure by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, on the government’s expenditure for Ghana’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.
