Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has described as surprising, the decision of the Governing Board of Achimota School to appeal a court ruling, compelling it to admit two dreadlock-wearing Rastafarian students.
The High Court has ruled that the School’s decision not to enroll the students breaches their human rights.
On the back of this, the Governing Board of the School announced its decision to appeal the ruling by the Human Right Division of the Accra High Court.
This was contained in a statement signed by Chairman of the Board on Tuesday, June 1.
But Dr Adutwum is startled by this latest move.
According to him, Management of the School cannot take such a decision unilaterally.
"I am very surprised. He cannot take that unilateral decision. I'm waiting for a full briefing of the Attorney General who I commend for going to court, so nobody can preempt us. So, Achimota Board, chill," he said on Accra-based Metro TV Tuesday.
He also hinted of a meeting later today, with the headmistress of Achimota School over the development.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of Child Rights International, Bright Appiah believes the ruling is still in force despite the institution’s decision to contest it.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has also urged its members at school to obey the court ruling.
According to the Association’s General Secretary Thomas Musa, “this ruling will not affect teacher-student relationship” if handled in the right manner.
