In their earlier matches, Ivory Coast finished top of Group E following a 3-1 win over Algeria, with the latter becoming the latest defending champions to suffer elimination in the first round of the competition.

Algeria took just one point from three games as they were beaten by Equatorial Guinea before the loss to the Elephants.

Tunisia lost to Gambia in the dying embers of the game through an Albie Jallow strike in added time while Mali recorded a 2-0 victory over Mauritania in Group F.
