The Akwatia Constituency of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Eastern Region is gearing up for another heated parliamentary primary to elect a candidate for the 2024 election.
The seat, which is predominantly an NPP seat, was lost to Henry Yiadom Boakye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 election.
But political observers believe the decision to change the NPP’s Mercy Ama Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, who was the MP at the time, caused the party's defeat with the new candidate, Ernest Kumi.
An aggrieved Ama Sey had threatened to go independent in the next election alleging rigging at the primary, but later aborted her plans after the party engaged her extensively.
One of those who impressed upon her to abort the idea was President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Ama Sey has now filed to contest the party’s parliamentary primary for the 2024 election, but she still faces opposition from two contenders, including the NPP’s 2020 parliamentary candidate, Ernest Kumi and one Castro Obeng Danquah.
As the campaigning by the three parliamentary hopefuls deepens, some leading members of the party in the constituency including a known financier, has told Myjoyonline.com that he’s willing to support a candidate whose marketability can easily recapture the seat for the NPP.
The philanthropist cum entrepreneur, who contributes diversely towards the NPP, Daniel Kofi Nyame, says the constituency has the finest and best human capital to steer the NPP into recapturing the parliamentary seat, and that delegates must be vigilant in their choice of candidate.
He said although all three aspirants are of good standing, he endorses and trusts in the capability and competence of Ama Sey to recapture the seat.

He thus urged the delegates to consider her since she has the right attributes and goodwill of the masses in Akwatia.
“If you ask me, I may be biased and say the only person we can present to recapture our seat is Hon. Ama Sey. Because of what she did when she was an MP, the people of Akwatia are crying for her. When you go round the constituency and ask every member of the constituency, they will tell you to bring Hon. Ama Sey, and that's why we are all backing her to come and recapture our seat for us.”
Mr Daniel Kofi Nyame believes the constituency remains united and that there’s no cause for alarm regardless of who emerges as the parliamentary candidate.
“The way forward for unity has been dealt with already. A couple of months ago, we called both sides, and all of us met at the Capital View Hotel in Koforidua with regional and national executives present, and we all swore an oath of peace and harmony. Ernest Yaw Kumi was there, Hon. Ama Sey was there, and whoever matters in this constituency was there, and we all talked about unity and the way forward.
“To me, now there's peace in the Akwatia Constituency, the process has been smooth from the opening of nomination to the filing of nomination, nothing has happened and everyone has been going about campaigning” he noted.
