In a thought-provoking panel discussion at the Society for Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Africa Annual Student Congress 2023, Ama O Sarpong took on the role of moderator for a panel of esteemed industry experts.
The topic of discussion, "The role of Africa in Global Energy Transition: The Student Perspective," shed light on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for oil and gas students and professionals in the face of a net-zero future.
The panelists included prominent figures in the industry, including Mr. Victor Sunu Attah from GNPC, Mr. Kwaku Boateng from PC, Mr. Ben Boakye from ACEP, Mr. Theophilus Awhireng from MODEC, Dr. Ishmael Ackah from PURC, and Mr. David Ampofo from GUPC.

Their collective expertise and insights provided a comprehensive view of the energy transition landscape in Africa.
The discussion delved into the significance of Africa's just energy transition as the world moves towards decarbonization. They discussed initiatives by the Petroleum Commission (PC) to encourage upstream industry preparedness, removing barriers to a smooth energy transition.

The panelists also debated the feasibility of achieving a net-zero African economy and the potential for harnessing the continent's vast energy resources, including oil, gas, and renewables, for accelerated development.
Furthermore, the panelists examined the growth potential in various energy transition areas for Africa, as well as the technological innovations and financial implications associated with the transition. They also deliberated on whether the energy transition posed a risk or an opportunity for Africa's oil and gas workforce.
