A new wave of fear has swept through the Savannah Region following a targeted arson attack in Kalba, a suburb of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district, which resulted in the destruction of two tipper trucks and a compound house.
JoyNews' Savannah Regional Correspondent, Isaac Nongya, reports that the incident, which occurred on the eve of Friday, September 12, 2025, has led to the arrest of two male suspects, who are currently being held at the Damongo Police Station.
The arson attack comes at a particularly sensitive time, as authorities are preparing for the official closure of the Sawla camp, which has been providing shelter to over 48,000 internally displaced persons from the recent Gbeniyiri conflict.
The proximity of the attack to this critical phase of resettlement has raised alarms that the violence may be reigniting.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, David Sinitina, confirmed the incident to Joy News.
"Yes, it's true that some two tipper trucks and a house were burnt in Kalba on Friday, and two people were arrested for that and kept in police custody in Damongo," the DCE stated.
The quick action by the Ghana Police Service in arresting the suspects is seen as a crucial step in preventing further escalation.
The destroyed vehicles and home are believed to be connected to the conflict, which has been simmering for months and has led to widespread displacement and loss of property.
The Gbeniyiri conflict has been a major humanitarian crisis for the region, displacing tens of thousands of people and causing significant economic disruption.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and whether the two suspects are directly linked to the Gbeniyiri conflict.
The incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and robust security measures to ensure a lasting peace for all communities in the Savannah Region.
