Bolgatanga East MP, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine says Carlos Ahenkorah should be arraigned for his snatching ballots for during the election of Speaker at Parliament on Thursday.
The former Attorney General said the actions of his Tema West colleague was in contravention of the law and that he must be punished to serve as an example to the people.
“What he [Carlos Ahenkorah] did by snatching the ballots that were counted is a crime. In fact, if I were still the Attorney General he will be processed for court,” he told Kojo Yankson on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Friday.
On the dawn of January 7, 2021 amidst the counting of ballots for Speaker nominees, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah snatched ballot papers from the hands of a parliamentary official and bolted through the exit of the chamber amidst resistance from his colleagues.
He was not successful as he was accosted by security and some MPs before he could leave the chamber and the ballots retrieved.
However, earlier MP for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak had snatched a ballot box and kicked down a polling booth in the chamber after a Member of Parliament from the NPP side had shown his ballot to his Chief Whip after voting.
Considering these two scenarios, the Bolgatanga East MP stated that Muntaka’s actions were in preservation and defense of the rule of law unlike Ahenkorah’s.
“For me when Muntaka insisted that it [the balloting] be secret he was simply seeking to protect and preserve the constitution in accordance with the oath that we take as members of Parliament. Now with Carlos Ahenkorah, what he did by snatching the ballots that were counted is a crime.”
Carlos Ahenkorah has since apologised for his actions claiming that he did it for grassroots, Akufo-Addo and NPP.
