The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, laid a wreath in memory of the late S. G. Antor at Logba in the Afadjato South Constituency.
The event was a solemn tribute to Antor, whom Bawumia acknowledged as a founding member of the NPP, praising him for his "sacrifice" and unwavering dedication to the party's ideals.
Born in 1931, S. G. Antor was known for his fearless opposition to the political ideals of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
His resistance led to his eventual arrest, but thanks to the intervention of the British government, Antor was released from detention, a testament to his unyielding spirit.
Antor's commitment to political activism played a crucial role in the formation of the United Party (UP) tradition, which eventually became the foundation of the NPP.
His efforts were instrumental in shaping the party's early structure and ideology, leaving a lasting legacy in Ghana’s political landscape.
Despite his impactful contributions, S. G. Antor eventually passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to the nation.
Dr. Bawumia, in his tribute, highlighted Antor's immense role in the political history of the NPP and the country at large.
“He opposed Nkrumah from 1957 when he was a member of Parliament for the area which was known as the Kpando North Constituency”
“Nkrumah ordered his arrest for treason in 1957. S. G. Antor appealed to the international court at the Hague. He was again arrested and placed in detention in 1966 and he was released after the 1966 coup.
"So, this is a man that has sacrificed when you look at his life history, he has sacrificed for Logba, he has sacrificed for this region, he has sacrificed for Ghana,” Dr Bawumia said.
