President Akufo-Addo has asked the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, the body mandated to accredit tertiary institutions to ensure the maintenance of the highest standard of integrity and quality in the schools.
Speaking at a programme to present charters to the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Catholic universities, the President noted that this will ensure that the country’s human resources meet the international criteria of tertiary education.
“I will ask the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to be even more vigilant in applying the new rules in order not to compromise the internationally acknowledged integrity and quality of Ghana’s higher education system,” he stated.
The President’s call comes after the Audit Service published its latest report that almost 700 programmes run by two of Ghana’s leading universities are without accreditation.
This cast doubt on the worthiness of such certificates.
Out of 360 programmes run by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), only 61 are accredited.
While the University of Ghana has 374 of its programmes unaccredited.
