The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra's protest walk against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, is currently underway, following a “Service of Preparation” held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral.
The event attracted Catholic worshipers, environmental activists, and members of the public, all united in their call to end the destruction caused by galamsey.
During the service, Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi, SVD, addressed the congregation, calling for divine intervention in the fight against environmental degradation.

He urged participants to remain steadfast in their advocacy to protect Ghana’s natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for the nation.
The protest saw demonstrators, including members of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey” group, holding placards with messages condemning illegal mining activities.

The protesters marched peacefully through designated routes, guided by police officers to ensure a smooth procession.
Chief crusader of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey” Emmanuel Wilson Jr., reiterated the need for more permanent measures to combat galamsey.

While acknowledging the president’s directive for the military and small-scale miners to address the issue, he stressed that only a complete halt to all illegal mining activities would effectively safeguard Ghana’s environment.
The protest walk reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts to stop illegal mining and highlights the urgent need for more decisive action to protect the country’s water bodies, forests, and ecosystems.
