Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to upholding the democratic rights and freedoms of all Ghanaians, particularly the right to peaceful protest and free expression.
He said this on Monday, 5 May, when members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties staged a demonstration and presented a petition to the Jubilee House in protest against the suspension of the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Receiving the petition from the coalition on behalf of the President, Mr Dogbe highlighted recent demonstrations held in the country, noting that citizens had exercised their rights without interference from the authorities.
He stressed that under the leadership of President John Mahama, the government will continue to foster an environment where such freedoms are respected and protected.
"I can assure you, and the people of Ghana, that we appreciate the fact that just as the government ensured you went about your demonstration peacefully, there was another one last weekend that also took place without any attempt to prevent people from expressing themselves," Mr Dogbe stated.
He highlighted this as a clear indication of the government’s democratic posture, which is a departure from the previous administration.
"We will continue to allow for peaceful expression in this country under President Mahama. Nobody is going to inhibit or stop anyone from doing that," he assured.
Mr Dogbe further remarked that within just under 120 days in office, President Mahama has already demonstrated a firm commitment to safeguarding and nurturing the nation's democracy.
"That should tell you that President Mahama, in less than 120 days, has shown how he is going to preserve and grow the democracy of Ghana," he noted.
