The Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye has indicated that despite the emergence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Ghana, a fourth wave of the pandemic is yet to occur.
According to him, the existing records do not speak to the presence of a fourth wave in the country.
"Oh no, we won't say we are in the 4th wave at all. What we are in is that we have seen signs that if we don't take action, we can be in it", Dr. Kuma-Aboagye explained.
Speaking on The Probe on Sunday, he said government is committed to preventing a fourth wave of the pandemic, through the enforcement of strict compliance with the relevant COVID-19 safety protocols.
The Director General of the GHS said so far, the country has done well with its vaccination regime. Therefore, the citizens must help consolidate the gains made by sticking to the relevant COVID-19 safety protocols, especially during the Yuletide festivities.
This is because, according to him, during the Christmas celebrations last year, a lot of Ghanaians let down their guard which resulted in a spike in the number of infections.
He was hopeful that the upcoming Christmas activities will not become the source of a surge in the number of infections.
Meanwhile, as of Sunday, December 12, the country's case count stood at a total of 131, 412 confirmed cases; with129,495 recoveries and 678 actives cases.
The number of new cases stood at 31 with 1,239 persons succumbing to the virus. The data from the Ghana Health Service also revealed that the Greater Accra Region still remains the hotspot of infections, followed by the Ashanti and Western Regions.
