A flagbearer aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kojo Bonsu, has added his voice to calls for the government to reduce the current tally of ministers in the country.
Speaking in an interview with Benjamin Akakpo on the AM Show on Monday, the presidential hopeful expressed dissatisfaction with the number of ministers in the current Akufo-Addo regime.
According to him, the present number, which lurks around 106 should be downsized to about 60 to 65 ministers.
This he said will help in efforts to restore the economy; adding that if he himself were elected into office, that would be an approach he will consider in salvaging the economy.
"...With economic stability, I'll put in what I call industrial agriculture. When all these things are done, Ghana will be better off.
"And also we cut unnecessary expenditure. And also cut down ministers. At the moment we have about 106 ministers. We can bring it down to 60-65. It will save us", he said.
"I'll bring it down", he added; indicating his intentions if he were elected as the NDC's next flagbearer and subsequently the president of Ghana.
In recent times, suggestions for government to cut down on the number of ministers in the wake of the prevailing economic crisis, have been rife.
The Minority in Parliament, civil society organisations, finance experts, as well as a host of other well-meaning individuals have all been impressing upon the president to reduce the size of government to give some relief to the national purse.
These calls have however, not been heeded by the president. But the former mayor of Kumasi believes that a reduction in the number of ministers is a giant step towards rescuing the economy.
Meanwhile, Kojo Bonsu has stressed the need for the country to prioritise five key issues in its quest to develop.
These, he said, include unity, peace, national security, economic stability and discipline.
In his view, once these areas are well developed, the lot of citizens will become better.
