Former Education Minister, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged the government to allocate state resources towards the development of Ghanaian women across all sectors of the economy.
Marking the celebration of International Women’s Day on Monday, Mrs Opoku-Agyemang stated that Ghana must invest in the talents and skills of women who make up the minority group.
According to her, the contributions made by women to the economy for many decades is what has made Ghana a nation to be desired by many.
“Celebrating International Women’s Day right after Independence Day allows us to connect the profile and welfare of women with nation-building, and I acknowledge all women from our various sectors such as mining, security and agriculture through health, education and industry to homes, offices, markets, beaches and many others for making tremendous contributions to our national life,” she stated.
The 2020 running mate for NDC’s John Mahama indicated that improving the wellbeing of women translates into advancing toward a successful nation since women constitute about 49.1 per cent i.e. 15,532,873 of the total 31,619,338 population as recorded in 2020.
“For example, because women tend to be the principal agents of primary education and primary healthcare, money channelled into the welfare of women will mean better education and health sectors.
“Again, women run the informal financial sector through the various markets spread across the country – receiving resources ensures that our economy will necessarily advance,” she added.
Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, therefore, used the opportunity to urge policy makers and various stakeholders to prioritize the needs of women, “considering the positive rippling effect that this focus will have on true sustained national development.”
“This is a powerful way to make our nation great and strong,” she concluded.
