After years of soul searching, Everton seem to have finally found the heir to Romelu Lukaku in the form of newly-born Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The English man is one of the many players who have enjoyed a good start to the 2020/21 campaign as he has continued to show signs of continuing from where he left of last season.
With just six games played, the 23-year-old has already grabbed two hat-tricks this campaign, a number that could even get better if he continues to stay fit.
Romelu Lukaku was the last Everton forward to score 25+ goals in the Premier League, reaching that feat during the 2016/17 campaign before his move to rivals Manchester United.
Those goals were enough to power the Belgium international to become the Toffees all time leading top-scorer in the Premier League – scoring 68 times, 11 above Duncan Ferguson.
Calvert-Lewin has all attributes to become a top-level footballer and a great finisher considering he is just 23. He first gained full promotion into the first-team during the 2017/18 season after joining from Sheffield
United a season before.
However, he has had to wait for the last two seasons to see himself in the headlines - becoming the club’s major source of goals.
The England youth international already has eight goals to his name in five appearances this campaign – five in the Premier League while grabbing three in the Carabao Cup.
Last season, Calvert-Lewin scored 13 goals in 36 Premier League matches. With the 23-year-old scoring five goals in his first three games, he looks set to surpass his record.
It may be early days yet but bookmakers have already tipped Calvert-Lewin to challenge for the league’s top-scorer award, and should that happen, he could be the first Everton player to scoop that prize since its existence in the 1992/93 season.
There is so much potential to his game, the Everton No.9 is a typical
definition of an ‘inside the box’ striker. His presence around the 18-yard box is definitely a worry to any opposition and that would even be more trouble as time goals on.
Playing along good skimmers like James Rodriguez and Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin could put an end to the talks of Lukaku in the history books of the Merseyside club.
