Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that the government is set to construct a first-class road from the country's port city, Tema, to Damango in the Oti Region as part of the ongoing Eastern Corridor road construction.
Speaking on roads under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration's Big Push agenda, Mr Agbodza emphasised the strategic importance of the Tema-Damango stretch, describing it as a critical road that must be completed to the highest standards.
"From Tema to Oti Damango must be first-class alphast, that is what we are aiming to do currently," he said on the Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Friday, August 1.
He disclosed that the government is committed to delivering the project within the next two years. "President Mahama says that, within two years, we should complete fully the Eastern Corridor road."
The Eastern Corridor road is a major national infrastructure initiative designed to connect the southern part of Ghana, beginning at Tema in the Greater Accra Region, to the northernmost regions, including the Upper East and Upper West.
The corridor runs through key towns such as Asikuma, Peki, Hohoe in the Volta region, Nkwanta, Damango, and Bimbilla.
It is envisioned as an economic spine for the eastern belt of the country, facilitating the movement of goods and people, reducing travel time, and opening up agricultural and commercial opportunities in previously underserved areas.
The project, once fully completed, is expected to significantly enhance regional trade and contribute to Ghana’s broader economic development agenda.
Burkina Faso is also expected to benefit from the road once it is completed, as it will shorten the travel distance between the Tema Port and Burkina Faso, making the movement of goods and services faster and more efficient.
Meanwhile, the road project has faced prolonged delays over the years, largely due to shifting political priorities and inconsistent commitment to its completion.
