Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has proposed a nationwide cultural dress day for Ghanaian students, inspired by President John Dramani Mahama’s recent appearance in a fugu during his visit to Zambia, a moment he described as a powerful display of national pride.
Speaking at the Global Closing Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025), Mr. Iddrisu praised the international recognition President Mahama received, calling it unprecedented.
“President Mahama getting the best honours that I have ever experienced in my life as a visiting president to another republic,” he said.
Highlighting the significance of Ghanaian cultural heritage, Mr. Iddrisu suggested the moment should encourage intentional promotion of indigenous culture, especially among young people.
“Maybe that reminds us and probably I should get the Director General of GES, to declare that on any day declared ‘OUR DAY’ every Ghanaian learner must go in a culturally fitting dress for them to observe our day nationwide, so that each culture, each society will reflect its values and culture as we observe it,” he proposed.
If implemented, the initiative would see students across the country wearing traditional attire representative of their ethnic heritage.
The measure is intended to foster greater cultural awareness, strengthen national unity, and ensure that Ghanaian traditions are celebrated and respected within the education system.
