In a significant move toward diversifying Ghana’s financial landscape, a high-profile delegation from GCB Bank PLC has met with the International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM) to finalise strategic plans for the launch of a dedicated Islamic banking window.
The delegation, which convened on February 10, 2026, was led by the Board Chairman of GCB Bank, Professor Joshua Alabi. The meeting served as a pivotal step in the bank's mission to deepen financial inclusion in Ghana by offering ethical, Shari’ah-compliant financial solutions.
Bridging Local Demand with Global Standards
As Ghana’s largest indigenous bank, GCB Bank aims to leverage the IIFM’s global expertise to ensure its new Islamic window operates under a robust, internationally aligned framework.
The collaboration will focus on:
Standardized Contracts: Utilizing IIFM’s globally recognized templates for Islamic financial contracts to ensure legal certainty.
Product Development: Adopting world-class product templates and operational guidelines to meet local demand.
Regulatory Alignment: Strengthening the bank's internal frameworks to foster a more resilient and inclusive financial ecosystem.
A New Era for Financial Inclusion
The introduction of Islamic banking is expected to provide alternative, non-interest-based financing options for diverse communities in Ghana. By moving beyond traditional interest-bearing models, GCB Bank intends to reach segments of the population that prefer ethical and risk-sharing financial products.
Professor Joshua Alabi noted that this initiative is part of the bank’s broader strategy to deliver innovative solutions and enhance shareholder value while contributing to national economic development.
Recent Strategic Momentum
This visit follows a series of interfaith and community engagements by GCB Bank in early 2026, including an Islamic Thanksgiving Service with the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.
Under the leadership of Managing Director Farihan Alhassan, the bank has entered 2026 with a focus on innovation and service excellence.
