Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced sweeping investments in road infrastructure and education as part of the government’s 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, pledging to accelerate national development and improve access to quality education.
Presenting the budget to Parliament on Thursday, Dr Forson disclosed that GH¢4.3 billion has been allocated to the Ministry of Roads and Highways for nationwide road construction projects.
“In addition to the Ministry of Roads and Highways allocation, we have allocated GH¢3.0 billion to the Ghana Road Maintenance Trust Fund to construct 10 kilometres of roads in each of the 166 constituencies in 2026, to keep roads motorable in constituencies in dire need of road infrastructure,” he said.
He further revealed that the government will allocate GH¢30 billion under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme to construct strategic roads and bridges aimed at linking national and regional capitals and boosting economic activity across the country.
Turning to education, Dr Forson said the government has earmarked GH¢33.3 billion for the Ministry of Education in 2026 to fund key programmes and activities, alongside GH¢9.9 billion for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, announcing that GH¢4.2 billion has been set aside for its implementation next year.
“To end the double-track system and improve the quality of our secondary education, we have allocated an amount of GH¢1.1 billion under the Ghana Secondary Learning Improvement Programme (GSLIP) in 2026,” Dr Forson told Parliament.
