The Concerned Voters Movement (CVM) has chastised former President John Dramani Mahama for not capturing the Saglemi Housing Project in the NDC’s 2020 manifesto.
The group says the failure of the former President to list the abandoned project as one his new government will complete; shows the NDC’s lack of commitment towards fulfilling promises made in the manifesto.
“Lies, hypocrisy, inconsistency, and half-baked truths are the main characteristics of the 143-page so-called People’s Manifesto of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
"We, the members of the Concerned Voters Movement (CVM) want to know; if the NDC’s Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, meant well to solve the housing problems in this country, why was Mr. Mahama and the entire NDC’s People’s Manifesto silent over the Saglemi Affordable Housing project which the NDC government started in 2012 although the project is uncompleted?” the group asked in a statement signed by its founder, Razak Kojo Opoku.
Giving more details, CVM also raised concerns about how the country invested so much money in the project. The group also accused the erstwhile Mahama administration of bloating the budget for the project.
“Facts backed by documents show that the 5000 Saglemi Housing project was scaled down twice yet the contract sum of $200 million remained unchanged.
"The project was altered without recourse to Parliament from 5000 units to 1502 and reduced again to 1,024 units.
"But the $200 million earmarked for the 5000 housing units remained the same,” the group alleged.
Initiated by the Mahama administration in 2012, the 5000 housing unit facility was designed to reduce the country’s massive housing deficit.
But the group says the NDC has failed as the project has been left abandoned.
They are therefore urging Ghanaians to be cautious of the many promises in the NDC's manifesto ahead of the December elections.
