Actor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has expressed confidence in unseating the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Honourable Lydia Alhassan, with a target of securing 60% of the votes in the ongoing special voting.

He revealed that his party made a few mistakes during the 2020 general elections, however, upon realising these errors, they have corrected them ahead of the upcoming 2024 election and are hopeful of learning from the past and doing things right.

Speaking to Joy FM's correspondent, Kweku Asante, at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency on Monday, December 1, John Dumelo expressed confidence that the NDC will emerge victorious on December 7.

“We made some mistakes in 2020, and in 2024 we corrected those mistakes. We are learning to do things right this time around, and I am very confident that, all in all, we will be victorious on Saturday,” he said.

The actor revealed that he has been very supportive of students at Legon campus with regards to scholarships since 2012. Therefore, he believes his benevolence towards students will be duly acknowledged and rewarded on Saturday. He also admitted that the campus is a very competitive environment when it comes to elections.

He highlighted some grievances made by students on campus.

“When you speak to the students, they are all complaining about the economic hardship, they are crying about the lack of accommodation, and you know we have an MP who has been here for six years, and she hasn’t even built a single room as part of her contribution to addressing the hostel deficit,” he claimed.

John added that the issue of hostels would be tackled when given the mandate, expressing confidence that the students will give him their support in the much anticipated election in the coming days.

He stated that after several interactions with constituents, most of them had assured him of voting for him in the general election due to his consistency in the constituency.

“I meet people who confess to me that ‘John, in 2020 I didn’t vote for you, but in 2024 I am voting for you because I want change. In 2024, I am voting for you because I have seen how consistent you’ve been after you lost Ayawaso West Wuogon. That’s the kind of leadership we need,’” he claimed.

John Dumelo reiterated that he does not give incentives such as rice or money to voters in order to solicit their votes, but rather gives them hope and promises to bring about change when given the mandate.
