The leader of the Movement For Change, Alan Kyerematen, has acknowledged his role in the current economic crisis facing the country.

Having served as a minister in the government for six years, he recognised the part he played during that time.

In an interview with Citi TV on Wednesday, February 7, the now independent presidential hopeful clarified that while ministers can provide direction and recommendations to the government, the ultimate responsibility lies with the president.

He emphasised that as a former minister, his role was advisory, and he did not have the authority to enforce decisions.

“There’s no doubt about that, how is it even possible to deny that you have been a minister and say that you are not part of a system? But that is not the case, you are talking about being a minister, governments are not run by ministers. It’s about the executive authority at the highest level. You provide the direction as a minister,” he explained.

Mr. Kyerematen also criticised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for trying to dissociate himself from the government's failures.

The former Trades Minister insisted that as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Bawumia cannot distance himself from the current economic challenges, as such attempts would be futile.

“This theory that if you are vice president you don’t have the leverage to do anything, that is not true. In the case of late former President J.E Mills, he literally gave everything to then vice president Mahama, every opportunity to lead processes.

"It is the same thing, President Akufo-Addo has also given the vice president [Dr Bawumia] every opportunity to lead processes of governance.”
