The Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has opposed a 90-day imprisonment sentence given to actress Akuapem Poloo by the Accra Circuit Court on Friday.
Rosemond Brown popularly known as Akuapem Poloo was convicted for posting naked pictures with her son on social media to celebrate his seventh birthday.
Taking to social media on the matter, Mr Sammy Gyamfi described the day as "sad" while describing the sentence given to Akuapem Poloo as "very harsh and high-handed."
The sentence given to @IamAkuapemPoloo is very harsh and high-handed. Given the fact that she is a first offender, pleaded guilty and showed remorse, non-custodial sentence would have been appropriate. Sad! I pray @NAkufoAddo remits her sentence or pardons her. #FreeAkuapemPoloo

The social media sensation prior to the court's ruling pleaded guilty for the offence, resulting in many including Sarkodie, Efya and other artistes campaigning for her release on social media. Despite their plea, the Accra Circuit Court ruled today that she serves some jail time.
According to the NDC Communication Officer, the fact that the defendant pleaded guilty, was remorseful of the said act in question and being a first time offender should have warranted a non-custodial sentence instead of a 90-day sentence.
"Given the fact that she is a first offender, pleaded guilty and showed remorse, a non-custodial sentence would have been appropriate. Sad!," he wrote.
He, therefore, encouraged President Akufo-Addo to exercise his prerogative of mercy and grant the Ghanaian actress amnesty in accordance with Article 72 of the 1992 constitution.
"I pray Nana Akufo-Addo remits her sentence or pardons her. #FreeAkuapemPoloo," he stated.
Article 72(1) of the 1992 constitution says that the President may in consultation with the Council of State grant a person convicted of an offence a pardon either free or subject to lawful conditions.
