Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artiste Sugar Ranking TheRabbi has hinted at a possible shift in his musical direction.

He has revealed that he may eventually put less emphasis on reggae and dancehall to focus more on highlife music. 

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the musician said highlife remains the foundation of Ghana’s musical identity and deserves greater attention from local artistes.

He explained that while reggae and dancehall have played a significant role in his career, he believes there will come a time when he will dedicate more of his creativity and energy to promoting highlife.

“Along the line, I will stop reggae and dancehall and continue with highlife because dancehall is a youthful genre. So far I’ve got some youthful exuberance in me I will continue to do but at a certain level, I will switch to highlife or mid-tempo reggae songs,” Sugar Ranking said. 

The musician, who is back to active music, disclosed that he put his promising music career on hold after joining the military, where he rose through the ranks to become a commissioned officer.

According to Sugar Ranking TheRabbi, his military career demanded his full attention, leaving little room to pursue music publicly.

He explained that regulations of the Ghana Armed Forces at the time did not permit serving military officers to perform publicly as musicians. This forced him to step away from the spotlight.

The outspoken musician began his music career in the late 1990s and became a familiar name on Ghana’s reggae and dancehall circuit before taking a break to pursue his military career. 

Known for his conscious lyrics and roots reggae influences, he has over the years built a reputation as one of the genre’s veteran performers. 

Following his return to music, he has released songs including No Pressure, Them Go Do, Solidarity in Africa, Ajo and Grass to Grace as part of his renewed effort to reconnect with music lovers and re-establish his presence on the Ghanaian music scene.
