Samuel Atta Akyea, the lawyer representing former National Signals Bureau head Kwabena Adu Boahene, has announced he will no longer communicate with Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine.
According to him, this boils down to potential leaks and political spin.
Atta Akyea made the revelation after today’s court hearing, where an Accra High Court ordered his client to remain in EOCO custody for seven working days.
The case was adjourned to May 13.
The seasoned lawyer expressed unease about private discussions being weaponised, stating:
"I’m careful lest I have a phone conversation, and somebody says that, oh, I'm trying to romance the Attorney General. There's a precedent, and I've been around long enough."
"I don't want to talk to the Attorney General, although we are very good friends, lest somebody might misinterpret it, and somebody might even go and leak a tape, tying it to hobnobbing with the Attorney General for some advantage. That is why I'm very quiet about it."
When pressed on whether he had severed all communications with Dr. Ayine, Atta Akyea confirmed that "I believe so."
"For now, I don't believe I should be discussing anything with the Attorney General. And if there is anything he wants us to do outside of trial, maybe he should find a better way of doing it. I'm scared that the kind of propaganda in the public space can put any kind of spin or interpretation on any engagement. So I’m very, very careful."
Samuel Atta Akyea has already condemned his client's prosecution as a travesty of justice.
"That is a travesty of justice, playing with the liberty of the individual," he told journalists at the court premises.
