Independent candidates must be allowed to join IPAC – Buaben Asamoa

A member of the Movement for Change, Yaw Buaben Asamoa is asking the Electoral Commission (EC), to allow for the inclusion of independent presidential candidates in Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings.

The former Adentan MP believes that independent candidates are vital stakeholders in the nation's electoral processes.

In an interview with Citi FM, Mr. Asamoa expressed that allowing these candidates to participate in IPAC would bring diverse ideas that could benefit the country.

“I would have loved that the independents are allowed to also voice their opinion within the formal circle of IPAC. That will make a difference. Hopefully, even if that does not work, we will put in our bit formally to discuss that,” he said.

“I think Ghanaians should look up and forward beyond the culture of the two dominant parties. You have the opportunity to break the winner-takes-all," he added.

This follows a proposal by the EC to change the election date from December 7 to November 7 and the declaration of the day as a holiday during its engagement with political parties at IPAC meetings.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has restated its objection to the proposed change in the election date by the Electoral Commission, which is contemplating a shift from December 7 to November 7.

The party stressed its opposition during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 29.

The NDC urged the public to dismiss any conflicting reports.

Additionally, the party revealed its support for altering the date for the 2028 general elections rather.

"The National Democratic Congress states without equivocation that the Electoral Commission's quest to hold the general elections in November 2024 will not be supported by the NDC."

"The announcement by Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman of Corporate Services of the EC does not reflect the irrefutable arguments that led to the consensus that any major electoral reforms should become effective from November 2028."
