An international non-governmental organisation, Engage Now Africa (ENA) as part of its contribution to International Literacy Day, has declared its intention to widen its support to the Ghanaian adult learner.
Aside from digital literacy training, the group is keen to equip adult learners with vocational skills as well.
For ENA, human-centred literacy is what will ensure the world recovers effectively from the Covid-19 pandemic.
"The role of technology during the Covid-19 induced school closure period in ensuring the continuity of literacy cannot be underemphasized. Hence, digital mediated learning should be extended to all especially, the youth and adults to enable them to keep pace with the current digitized world. The world will recover fully, only when the proffered literacy is centered on humanity.
"All facet of human life has been affected in several ways and the recovery will not emerge by the flip of a switch but through fixes. Therefore, every action taken in this direction must be centered on humanity. Engage Now Africa (ENA) is ever ready to respond to this call with passion," the group's press statement read.
September 8, is set aside annually by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to evaluate global literacy to obtain the progress of young people and adults.
This year's theme is ''Literacy for human-centered recovery: Narrowing the digital divide".
In 2020, Engage Now Africa engaged in several initiatives with respect to reducing illiteracy and increasing literacy among the Ghanaian population despite the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Digital mediated teaching and learning was employed to ensure the knowledge already acquired was not eroded due to the lockdown, one of government's initiatives to curb the spread of the virus.
Individuals who learnt vocational skills produced over 2000 alcohol-based sanitizers and face masks which were distributed to the vulnerable in the society. They also embarked on sensitization exercises to inform the public on how to stay safe by adhering to the Covid-19 safety protocols.
Other skills picked up included shower gel making, batik, tie and dye, beads making, baking, washing powder making, disinfectant and bleach preparation among others.
A total of 1,200 adults graduated after ENA fully resumed recruitment and training of adult learners when government lifted the lockdown. Two thousand new adult learners were also recruited.
As Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate International Literacy Day 2021, Engage Now Africa has reiterated its commitment to centering every literacy program especially, digital literacy around the adult learner.
Engage Now Africa is currently in partnership with United Way Ghana in providing literacy and vocational skills to about 500 learners in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central and Easting regions.
Engage Now Africa (ENA) is an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that offers varied interventions to various communities across the nuke and cranny of Ghana.
One of the intervention areas is adult literacy. The NGO has over the years supported the Ministry of Education in its quest to reduce illiteracy and increase literacy among the Ghanaian population.
