Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo has played a key role in helping Real Oviedo secure promotion to LaLiga, ending the club’s 24-year exile from Spain’s top tier.
Oviedo sealed their return with a dramatic 3-1 extra-time victory over Mirandés on Saturday in the second leg of the playoff final, edging the tie 3-2 on aggregate. Sibo was influential across both legs of the contest.
The 26-year-old featured prominently throughout the season, making 38 appearances while registering one goal and one assist to help guide the team back to the top flight.
In Saturday’s decisive encounter, Sibo started and lasted 108 minutes before being substituted, underlining his importance in midfield.
Former Arsenal and Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla sparked the comeback with a composed penalty late in the first half, cutting Oviedo’s aggregate deficit to 2-1.
Moroccan Ilyas Chaira then restored parity on aggregate with a second-half strike, before Francisco Portillo produced a spectacular extra-time winner to complete the turnaround.
The result capped a memorable campaign for Oviedo and marked a major milestone in Sibo’s career, with the Ghanaian now set to feature in LaLiga next season for the first time.
