The Central Regional Council of State Member, Hakim Adei, has appealed to Ghanaians to throw their weight behind government efforts to eliminate illegal mining (galamsey) in the country.
Speaking at the 44th Anniversary and 4th Speech and Prize-Giving Day of Twifo Praso Senior High School in the Twifo Atti Morkwa District of the Central Region, Mr. Adei emphasised that illegal mining is destroying the nation’s lands and water bodies due to the actions of a few greedy individuals.
He stressed that concerted efforts were key to overcoming the menace of galamsey and urged all citizens and residents to unite to stop the practice.
The event was held on the theme “21st Century Skills and the World of Work, the Role of Modern-day Education.”
The Headteacher of Twifo Praso SHS, Daniel Kofi Aidoo, expressed concern over the challenges facing the school, such as the lack of computers, inadequate classrooms and dormitories, and the lack of a school bus, forcing management to rent buses for official activities, draining the school’s finances.
He appealed for urgent government intervention to resolve them and also asked that the school be placed on the single-track system.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Isaac Yawson, pledged the government’s commitment to support the school.
He assured that a modern ICT laboratory and other developmental projects would soon be provided to meet the needs of the district.
Nana Kenny IV, the Omanhene (Paramount Chief) of Twifo Atti-Morkwa, for his part, advised students to eschew drug abuse and all negative tendencies that could destroy their health and future.
