Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for Ghana’s recent abstention from a United Nations vote on LGBTQ+ rights.
In a social media post on Wednesday, July 9, the Assin South MP expressed disappointment, accusing the President of abandoning the country’s longstanding moral position on the issue.
“Ghana has abstained from a vote on LGBTQ at the UN. President Mahama has completely shifted away from the country’s bold stance against LGBTQ,” Rev. Ntim Fordjour wrote.
He warned that the government’s action sends a dangerous signal and undermines the collective values upheld by religious institutions, traditional authorities, and ordinary citizens.
The MP further called on faith-based organisations, the National House of Chiefs, and the wider public to speak out.
“Faith-based organisations, House of Chiefs and citizens must rise up boldly to defend our cherished values,” he urged.
Rev. Ntim Fordjour also referenced a recent incident in which a same-sex couple was filmed kissing beneath Ghana’s Independence Arch.
“This absurd vote comes barely a week after a same-sex couple were emboldened to kiss under the Independence Arch; desecrating our national monuments, without a pinch from President Mahama and his government,” he said, describing the act as a national affront that went unaddressed by the presidency.
