President John Mahama has announced that he has received a comprehensive report detailing cases of electoral violence from the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
He pledged that where wrongdoing is confirmed, perpetrators will be held accountable and victims will receive compensation.
Addressing GJA leadership on Friday, President Mahama stressed that he received the report last week, which forms part of his commitment to reinforce democratic values and curb political violence in Ghana.
He signaled that prosecutorial decisions and victim compensation mechanisms will follow once the Attorney General finalizes his recommendations.
The report, compiled by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, outlines violent incidents in both election cycles, including shootings and clashes involving political supporters and security personnel.
The findings have now been formally referred to the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for legal scrutiny and further action.
Previously, the President had directed the IGP to launch a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) task force to probe the circumstances surrounding these election-related deaths, a total of eight fatalities in 2020 and three in 2024.
He also mandated that forensic analysis, witness interviews, and deep reviews in collaboration with the Electoral Commission form key parts of the inquiry.
In addition, the Attorney General has been asked to evaluate fair and adequate compensation for victims and their families, reinforcing that measures toward redress and reform must be just, transparent, and inclusive.
