The Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party has ridiculed comments indicating that electorates in the Volta Region were induced financially to vote for the NPP.
Makafui Woanyah described the comment by the Flag-bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama as an insult to the people of the Volta Region, who had until recently heavily supported his party.
“His assertion that Voltarians are now voting for NPP because of propaganda and financial inducement is insulting”, he said during a press conference in Ho to respond to “false claims” by John Mahama during his tour of the Volta Region.
Mr. Woanyah further indicated that John Mahama and the NDC are only concerned about votes from the Volta Region and ride on it to power, without taking interest in the development of the region.
He noted that this had been evident during the period in which the NDC was in government, where the region received very little development.
He further alleged that the leader of the NDC had in the past demonstrated his “dislike and vindictive reprisal against Voltarians”, when he was President.
“Mahama is on record to have removed most Voltarians from their various positions and recalled Voltarian Ambassadors from their missions. Even national party positions he pushed against Voltarians. I wish to state also that, we have had enough insults from the Former President”, he said.
Mr. Woanyah said John Mahama again exhibited his disrespect for the region when he likened Dr. Bawumia’s NPP Manifesto to a staple food of the people of Ewe origin.
“The other day when he visited Tegbi, he told our people that each time they finished voting, they go to eat "akple" and sleep. This comment is in bad taste.
“The worse of his derogatory comments about the Volta Region was when he described the NPP Manifesto as worse as "Akple and fetri detsi", the staple food of the Voltarians. We call on our chiefs and leaders of the NDC in the Volta Region to demand an unqualified apology from the former president”, he stressed.
Mr. Woanyah concluded that electorates in the Volta Region are voting for the governing party because they have come to realize it best develops the region and has their interest at heart.
“If for nothing, the people of Hohoe constituency in particular have demonstrated to the NDC and Ghana that they identify with politics of development and improvement of lives and not politics of propaganda and religious attachment.
“Mahama and his NDC should therefore brace themselves up for further deterioration of their fortunes as the government of the New Patriotic Party continues its massive infrastructure development and projects in all spheres of our national life and pursuit of policies and social interventions across the country and the Volta Region in particular. As a Party, we are battle-ready to confront the propaganda and tribal politics”, he noted.
