Minister nominee for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, has reiterated his commitment to working with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to ensure that the productivity of workers aligns with their earnings.
Dr Pelpuo made this statement when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Thursday, 30th January 2025, where he outlined his vision for enhancing productivity and addressing employment challenges in Ghana.
When asked about his strategy for ensuring that workers' output matches their earnings, Dr Pelpuo emphasised the complexity of the issue, noting that it involves numerous individuals and organisations.
He pledged to collaborate with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to tackle this challenge, acknowledging its constitutional implications.
On the topic of gender representation in the workforce, Dr Pelpuo recognised the need to promote gender balance and equal opportunities within the workforce.
He also expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges facing Ghana's workforce and fostering economic growth through collaboration with the private sector.
To tackle the issue of unemployment, Dr Pelpuo spoke about the ongoing development of a Labour Market Information System, which will provide a comprehensive database of job vacancies and potential candidates.
This system would allow the private sector to advertise job openings and connect with prospective employees.
Dr Pelpuo also emphasised the importance of supporting the private sector in creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. He suggested that the government offer incentives for private sector investment, such as access to credit and investment opportunities.
"We will encourage the private sector to produce as much as they can, and we will support them," Dr. Pelpuo assured.
He also mentioned that the government’s "24-hour economy" initiative is designed to boost production and foster economic growth.
When asked whether the government has plans to increase salaries for public sector workers, Dr Pelpuo confirmed that it is one of the key areas under consideration.
He assured that, once he takes office, he will prioritise this issue and take necessary action.
