The Minority in Parliament has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to urgently recall Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, citing alleged unprofessional behaviour and a failure to protect the country’s diplomatic interests.
The call was made by the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, who argued that the ambassador’s conduct has further undermined Ghana’s position at a time of heightened diplomatic strain.
According to Mr Ayeh, instead of concentrating on critical engagement with key US institutions, the ambassador has been distracted by what he described as unnecessary political exchanges, thereby neglecting pressing national responsibilities.
He accused the ambassador of violating established consular confidentiality protocols and entangling Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Washington in partisan domestic political matters, a move he said fell short of acceptable diplomatic standards.
Mr Ayeh described the situation as a clear lapse in judgment and duty, insisting that such actions reflected poorly on Ghana’s foreign service leadership and weakened the country’s ability to advance its interests abroad.
“The timing of this conduct is particularly troubling,” he said, noting that Ghana’s diplomatic relations with the United States require careful handling and sustained engagement, not public posturing.
The Minority warned that Ghana cannot afford ambassadors who prioritise media statements over quiet, strategic diplomacy, especially when bilateral relations and the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad are at stake.
They stressed that restoring professionalism and focus within Ghana’s diplomatic missions is critical to safeguarding national interests and rebuilding confidence among international partners.
