The Minority in Parliament has announced its intention to step up oversight of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) concluded its presidential primary, resulting in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerging as the party’s flagbearer.
A statement signed by the Minoriry Leader indicated that their immediate focus will shift to holding the NDC administration accountable on issues affecting the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
"Our immediate task is clear: we must turn our attention outward to scrutinise the current NDC administration’s performance. Through our parliamentary work and public engagement, we shall hold the government accountable on critical matters affecting ordinary Ghanaians."
It added that the Caucus would closely examine concerns surrounding the depletion of Ghana’s gold reserves, citing what it described as questionable transactions and substantial financial losses arising from alleged bogus gold trading schemes involving state institutions, including the Minerals Commission and the Bank of Ghana.
The Minority also raised concerns about what it termed the government’s poor management of public transportation systems, which it says has left commuters facing persistent hardships, as well as a deterioration in Ghana’s international relations and standing among long-standing development partners.
On environmental issues, the Caucus criticised the NDC government’s response to illegal mining (galamsey), warning that continued inaction has resulted in the pollution of water bodies and the destruction of farmlands across the country.
Youth unemployment was also flagged as a major concern, with the Minority accusing the government of failing to create meaningful job opportunities.
The statement linked this failure to growing economic despair among young people and cited tragic incidents reported at military recruitment centres as evidence of the severity of the situation.
