National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, has announced that the new 24-hour economy proposed by the flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama, will lead to the creation of over 9,000 new jobs at Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) alone.
Speaking on NDC360, Mr Eric Opoku said the initiative aims to enhance efficiency and boost employment opportunities by ensuring round-the-clock operations at the ports.
The 24-hour economy at the ports is projected to significantly decrease congestion, reduce shipping delays, and enhance the overall efficiency of port logistics, he added.
The strategy is part of a broader plan to improve the economic infrastructure and create more employment for the citizenry.
“…because there is traffic at the ports and harbours, when Mahama takes over as president, we will schedule the work into three – that is 8-hour shifts for all. So, the existing 4,500 at the ports will be maintained for the first 8-hour shift, another 4,500 will be employed for the second shift, and the same for the third shift. So Ports and Harbour will have 9,000 new employees,” he said.
Mr Opoku added that it will also lead to an increase in revenue, which will help prevent the government from operating at a loss.
Also, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi noted that the 24-hour economy initiative aims to ensure "round-the-clock processing of passport applications (24/7) at all passport application centers across the country."
He stated that the initiative would operate on a three-shift, 8-hour system, addressing complaints about undue delays at passport application centers.
